Since 11/9 all passengers entering the United States need to clear INS and customs at their first port of entry - even if only transitting. So passengers on the AC flight from Toronto to Sydney which stops in HNL need to go through the rigamarole at HNL.
It is therefore feasible for passengers who arrived in LAX on QF to use the QF107 from LAX to JFK - whether or not QF sell the seats on this sector alone is another matter.
