Yeah, I had a capt announce that on a DEN-SLC flight. I listened in on channel 9 and it was true. We stayed at a low cruising altitude to avoid it and it was pretty cool flying that low over the mountains.
People are generally stupid and ignore the seatbelt sign. It is better to scare them than deal with injuries.
I agree. The more we fly the more we get used to turbulence. I was on a flight to LAX once and heard the pilot tell ATC that the air had become extremely choppy. ATC thanked him and said that they would send the information on to later flights.
I would rather be scared with knowledge than live in blissful ignorance.
