I think you're remembering wrong. My family participated in the Eastern Weekender program back then and I logged lots of miles on 757s in the process. Based on my recollections, the planes were similar to those in service today, but F sure was nice.

Edited to add: I felt guilty during the moments after I posted because I recalled that we didn't start flying Eastern until ~1984. Hence, my comments would have been invalid with respect to the 1980-83 time frame. But, then I remembered that the 757 wasn't introduced until 1982.... so I'm probably ok.

Since I'm still around, I'd like to take the opportunity to express my views on the topic in question. Until the day comes when pax can nap at their will in the aisles, I think the stats that gave rise to this thread are meaningless. That said, I've had the misfortune of traveling in some 10-across 777s in recent years (down with CZ!) and, therefore, agree that narrow aisles aren't very nice.
