Just to clarify, (not trying to give the OP false hopes) but these international BE upgrades can happen on day-of-departure; they are not allowed as airport standby. I have cleared on day of departure before; you cannot have checked-in (for Y) and standby at the gate for the upgrade. The PMU cert is explicit about this - says no airport standby allowed for international - it doesn't say no day-of-departure upgrade processing. That being said, a call to SMS and Customer Service certainly won't hurt either....
