I think you would be allowed on the earlier flight. I've had no problems switching at the last minute on a revenue ticket. They do have a better chance of getting revenue from your seats reclaimed from the later flight so this is advantageous to them. QF used to cater a full load in F, but many airlines dont' do that any more (I suspect QF does cater extra meals, there seemed to be lots of leftovers for the staff).
