One of my pet peeves is odor. Usually that is cars that smell strongly of cigarette smoke, or strongly of some kind of perfume smell that is supposed to hide the smoke smell.
cigarette smoke is on the "complaint" list. Avis will have no problem compensating you with a different car, or better car, if you complain about smoke on the spot.
That perfume you are talking about is "avis scent".

that stuff, though a carpet cleaner, when sprayed in the air intake vents usually cleans out 80% of the smoke smell. Heavy smoker cars usually need an enzyme bath and a good 3-4 hours worth of Ozone treatment to get the smell out.
One of the reasons ive been an advocate of returning to a smoking/non smoking fleet.
