I know many in the Islands who abhor going to Costco and think the $50 is not a good membership fee for the headache that comes when dealing with the Costco crowds, esp. with the one at Iwilei packed almost all hours its open.
I agree you won't recoup the money on a one week trip. I guess my point is, if you live on the island and drive, unless you're a little old lady only driving to the Koloa Community Church on Sunday's, you'll recoup the $50, at the rate of about 15 cents a gallon.
And, while the crowds may be a hassle (and granted, I have the ability to go at times when the crowds are smaller), if the $50 isn't worth it for you, then money is probably not a problem in your life, because the savings are substantial over the very high prices elsewhere.
