switching rental cars in LA area - LAX or ... ?

Hi all,

Planning a diy flydrive for May/June, arriving into PHX then driving up to the Grand Canyon, LV, LA and up H1 to SFO and home.

Want an SUV for Arizona and the Canyon, but obviously a convertible for Highway 1 - seems to be best to take one car from PHX to LA (paying one drop fee) and then another from LA to SF (can get a weekly rate from Hertz for $340 fully inclusive for a Mustang convertible).

I am still trying to work the cheapest/best deal for the SUV, which may or may not be with Hertz (currently Alamo looking likely). Therefore I'm trying to find the best location to switch from one rental co to another around LA, and figuring that one of the airports would be best.

We still haven't decided where we're staying in LA, which will obviously make a difference, but:
are all the rental companies located in the same place at LAX ?
regardless of the above, should we avoid LAX at all costs ?
if we do, which other airport has all the regular rental companies and is sensibly located for someone driving into LA from Vegas and heading (probably) for the Beverly Hills area ?

Help much appreciated.
thanks
