Sure you can. First, 40 inches of pitch in business is way too low. Let's look at the 'area' of C/J vs. Y seats on a UA 777.

55 inches in length * 1/7th the plane in width =
7.86
-Economy-
31 inches in length * 1/9th the plane in width =
3.44
The ratio of areas is
2.28. That ratio would start to fall below 2 with a Business seat pitch below 48 inches, which is now mostly the exception (old business class on CX, LH, etc) than the rule.
