Qantas is pretty much a no go as far as complimentary status.

If you are going to be travelling with QF and want to make travelling more civilised until you reach status level, you could join the Qantas Club. Costs AUD587 and provides lounge access to BA/QF/AA/US lounges and with Qantas provides access to check in at the QF Club check in, or where there is not one, check in at business class. It also allows an extra 10Kg luggage allowance and, when travelling withing Australia, priority luggage handling.

When you reach Gold, the remainder of the years membership will be suspended and reactivated should you drop below gold in the future. Although it isnt a staus match, it provides most of what you would get with Qantas should you have status.
