Will I need to fill out the customs form on the United Flight or wait until my Lufthansa Flight as I am only docking myself in Tel Aviv? What signs do I follow so that I will be taken to my next gate as opposed to customs.
No customs and border control for Germany as you stay airside. No German forms (there aren't any anyway). There might be special security for Tel Aviv.

You never have to fill in any forms to enter Germany. We are non buerocratic country. You can sleep in the secure area, but you can easily (provided you travel on US passport) enter Germany (will take you five minutes) and sleep in the Sheraton at the airport.

Any good diversions to keep me busy and not bored?
Depends on your status with Star Alliance. In general, I would invest 79 Euro for a hotel.

I am trying to save money as I am trying to enjoy myself without a big budget.
YES. Immigration will take you 10 minutes on US passport. Check in for your next day flight and be at the airport 60 to 70 minutes before departure and have a good sleep.
