FRA Airport Questions

OK fellow Flyertalkers,

I need your advice about what to do on a layover in both directions at Frankfurt airport. I will be going to Israel from San Francisco in May. Here are my questions:

On the way to Frankfrut I am arriving on United and leaving on Lufthansa. Do I need to clear customs or security. When I get off my United flight how do I stay within the secure area to transfer to my Lufthansa flight? My luggage will be checked in to Tel Aviv on the UA Codeshare flight. Will I need to fill out the customs form on the United Flight or wait until my Lufthansa Flight as I am only docking myself in Tel Aviv? What signs do I follow so that I will be taken to my next gate as opposed to customs.

On the return I have an overnight stay at Frankfurt. Do I need to clear customs/immigration since Lufthansa booked me on this flight arriving at 7:40 PM and departing and 9 the next morning. Do I need to fill out a customs card since I am transiting. Can I sleep within the secure area?

Where can I take a shower within the secure area of the Lufthansa terminal? How much should I expect to pay? Are towels included?

Are the shops in the secure area open 24 hours? Where is a good and inexpensive place to get a lunch and breakfast?

Is there a good English bookstore within the secure area. Can I access a lounge for the day as an Economy passenger? Any good diversions to keep me busy and not bored?

Any suggestions as what to do would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance. I will add to this post should further questions come up.

Or would you splurge and book a room at the Mericure Frankfurt airport for $79 dollars on the overnight layover. How long does it take to clear customs and to go back to the gate since my luggage will be checked to SFO. I plan to take a change of clothes on both legs so that I can shower and feel relaxed. I am trying to save money as I am trying to enjoy myself without a big budget.
