To answer your basic question, if the flight is not oversold, and no one is willing to pay the price to upgrade in miles, stickers, or kiosk offers, the seats will go out empty, as they should. As an AMR stockholder i don't want them giving away their product for free just cuz no one is using it. As an AA flyer I'd rather have a more empty FC cabin, all other things considered.
