I imagine smaller, since, to me, "searchable" implies that the scanned bitmap has been converted to text (OCR). Text + font attibutes is way smaller than a bitmap.
Think about it: 8.5 * 11" @ 300 dpi = 8MB greyscale uncompressed. That's a lot bigger than a one page MS Word file (or most 1 page text PDF files).
