In the 'normal' case you will see two different flight numbers and it is called a connecting flight. When there is an equipment change both segments have the same flight number and it is effectively a direct flight.

The main distinction is that direct flights are listed in flight displays on GDS terminals (what travel agents and others use to select and book flights) ahead of connecting flights. It is commonly thought that a direct flight listed ahead of a competitor's connecting flight will sell better.
