Quantas sounds great, but I want to be able to use whatever miles I earn flying elsewhere in the world, and I think AA would be better for that.

Qantas is part of the OneWorld Alliance, so you could
credit to your AAdvantage account and redeem via AA. Of course, we being SkyTeam advocates wouldn't recommend that.
See if you can convince them (your corporate travel policy) to let you buy via Orbitz (usually pretty good about pricing out KE itineraries) or over the phone with NWA reservations folks.
And try to sit tight. I don't have specifics, but I don't think we'll have to be waiting too much longer to see better SkyTeam coverage for the South Pacific.
