Airline stickers for departing passengers

Just what's the reasoning behind handing out airline logo stickers to departing passengers at the airport? From what I remember, the practice is older than CLK, as I recall putting one on at Kai Tak.

Some years back when I flew GUM-HNL on a Tuesday morning, my seatmate was a Filipino guy with a CO sticker. He soon confirmed my suspicion that he had just flown in from HKG, not MNL.

And 35 hours ago at HKG Aisle H, I went directly to NW's self-check kiosk, and was never handed a sticker. I was done in 3 minutes since there was no line, but the "regular" line was much longer. What's up with those people?
