Why a different callsign than flight number?

I flew on UA597 last night (4/1) ORD-->MSP.

The flight was delayed about 3 hours (crew) and when we finally left, the callsign being used on Ch. 9 was "United 8527". The pilot also mentioned that the callsign would be different before we took off.

I fly this same flight every week and the callsign always matches the flight number. Furthermore, looking up UA8527 shows me that it is an actual flight YYZ-->ORD. Every other aspect of the flight (BP, monitor, "destination check") was referred to as the original 597.

Any thoughts? Thanks ^
