FAQ: Fare Class Definitions (including which fares are upgradeable)

Effective October 8, 2003 NW has introduced "L" and "T" fares into thier mainstream bucks.

This thread was created in attempt to crate a clear, concise, complete and accurate source of fare class definitions. Information on which classes can be upgraded with miles, and how you can determine availability, is also included.

Domestic, Canada, Mexico and Caribbean

P - full-fare First

F – discounted First

A – award First

Y – full-fare Economy

B – slightly discounted Economy

M, H, Q, V – discounted Economy

L, T, K – deeply discounted Economy

using miles to upgrade – use the award charts to find appropriate mileage amounts
persons without WorldPerks Elite status:
Any fare other than T or K can be upgraded; upgrades from Y come from “P” and upgrades from discounted fares come from “F.”

persons with WorldPerks Elite status:
Y fares will receive a complimentary upgrade if there is “P” availability; all others can be upgraded with miles.

Trans-Atlantic/Trans-Pacific

J – full-fare Business

C - discounted Business

Z - deeply discounted Business

D - award Business

Y – full-fare Economy

B - slightly discounted Economy

M, L, H, Q, V, L - discounted Economy

using miles to upgrade – use the award charts to find appropriate mileage amounts
Upgrades from Y come from Z, upgrades from B and M* come from I; no other fares can be upgraded.

*”M” is not eligible for upgrading for travel to/from HKG, PEK, PVG or across the Atlantic.

Recommended Websites
seatmap.com – shows seat maps, Galileo (displays additional fare buckets that help you determine upgrade availability on transoceanic flights) and schedule information after you’ve typed in your flight and date.
ITN.net via AOW – the most accurate information when searching for standard fare bucked availability
WPAA – useful for searching for standard WorldPerks award availability
NWA.com Japan – more useful (more search features, more partner availability than WPAA, etc.) than the USA website when searching for WorldPerks award availability
a listing of other websites recommended by AOW
