That said, many of my new wealthy neighbors have relocated from the west coast. They do not wave or smile at their neighbors, all of us kama'aina that built homes +30 years ago. They drive too fast on our residential streets, blatantly use their automobile horns, don't wave or shaka in appreciation of being let in on the highway. Often "please and mahalo" are not exchanged in conversation and demands, rather than requests, are made.

If you embrace the aloha spirit it will come back to you. Haole is less about race or color, unless it is being used by a seemingly unintelligent thug or racist. Moreover it is often to explain "to assume airs of superiority, often disparagingly".

I can't tell you how many times I have heard "on the mainland we do/did it this way". .....to quote the great old school Olomana group " In the islands, we do it island style". Slower, graciously and with humbleness.
Anyone ignorant enough not to use or feel Aloha is just jealous. Perhaps their parents didn't bring them up right.
