When we arrived at SLO (as it's referred to around these parts) the clerk greeted me by name and said that it was an honor to have a Gold Ambassador staying there ("you're the first one I've met in over a year"). Needless to say we were upgraded to the nicest room, a large suite (no separate bedroom but still very large) complete with robes! Plus plenty of home baked cookies at the front desk all day long (better than doubletree). Suffice it to say this property gets a thumbs up as one of the finest in the HI Express inventory.
I'm not going to go quite as far as to say it is one of the finest. Just had a stay here. Upgraded to a suite with a separate bedroom and a wet bar.
Bed was very poor, complete mush, no support
The outdoor pool is very small and there is not a lot of pool deck area. So small I don't think I saw any lounges, only chairs.
The property is not close to the neat downtown area, so one has to drive to get downtown which I recommend, lots of shops and eats.
The hotel also backs up to a strip mall on one side and a restaurant on the other. The 5am restaurant garbage truck banging around didn't help the atmosphere, nor did the unloading/loading of the trucks for the strip mall area. I could also imagine if the wind was blowing the wrong way the restaurant smells might be an issue.
I think I'll stay elsewhere next time in SLO.
