Thanks for those suggestions. I had registered my SIM when I was in New Zealand (they gave 10 NZD airtime for doing so) but the web site no longer recognizes my login. I just now tried registering again and was told a password would be sent to the phone as an SMS. So I put the SIM in my phone and turned it on. On both GSM networks here in the Bay Area it came up as "emergency calls only". So then I tried calling it from my landline and was told the number was not known. It does look like it's been recycled.
