I think you can easily fight this by calling Gold Customer Service. Usually, you are only charged extra per hour and not a whole day extra. But, Hertz does have the right to recharge you for a week rental. I always try to return my rental a bit early to avoid these kind of problems. But, sometimes there is nothing you can do (i.e. traffic jams, accidents, etc).
