Don't you ever do work on the side for someone? Sell something on ebay? It doesn't really take anything official to be a sole proprietorship other than to say, my business is Ripper & Associates. You have a 9 digit form of government identification that can be used for the FEIN.
I'm not a lawyer, so take that with a grain of salt. But that is my understanding of how some FTers that I've talked with do this without having a business that employs people.(besides yourself)
