Seems like bad luck or something else to me. There is no dispute about one flight number is one coupon unless you stayed in STL for a day and then left on the continuation flight the next day or unless you requested the routing from CX in that manner and listed LAX-DFW-STL. And some who after BA tier points issue the BAH tier point run flights as two coupons.
