Something sounds very fishy here, it seems that a cover up by the hotel might be going on. If the hotel had thought you had checked out, all valuables should have been taken into custody by management with more than one person in attendance for security purposes, inventoried with full details and documentation, and placed into a secured area until determination could have been made as to the disposition of those items.
As other posters have indicated contact the police. I would then write a letter to senior management of the hotel (forget the individual site) and explain as you did here (and this poster did a good job of not adding emotions to the incident despite what was a horrific experience). Indicate that you want fair compensation. At least certainly some form of complimentary stays (unrestrictive) are in order.
