One one ticket or two? 2 different airlines: What happens with a misconnect?

So I think I know the answer but just wanted to verify...

So both me and my boyfriend are doing separate things to get to SYD due to our schedules and fares...

I'm flying on on ticket LAX-BKK on NW and BKK-SYD on EK. On the return it's basically SYD-BKK-LAX with a 5 hour lay over between the EK and NW flights.

Can I interairline my luggage so I don't have to deal with that? I think so.
So what happens if I miss my BKK-NRT-LAX flight? I'm basically at the mercy of NW if they'll put me on the next day's flight right??

My BF is flying LAX-HNL on DL, the HNL-SYD on HA, ticketed together on one ticket via Orbitz.

So in his case if he misconnects, what happens? If DL screws up who's responsible? If HA screws up who's responsible? What would happen to him and what are his rights??

Thanks.
