In my experience, every AC has a similar procedure for using the showers: you ask at the desk for a key; if one is available they give it to you, and if not they add your name to a waiting list; after you've showered you return the key to the desk, and they confirm that the shower has been cleaned before giving that key out again. Couldn't be more straightforward.
I remember having a similar experience at MIA, where the AAgent gave me this confused look when I asked for a shower key. Its worth adding, though, that there doesn't appear to be a standard system per say... at ORD, the few times I've showered, they've walked me over to the showers and let me in, while at DFW they give you the key after handing over collateral (boarding pass)
