If the ORIGINAL itinerary is not flown for reason x, just call and have them credit the original itin and not the one actually flown. It does not matter that the ticket was endorsed over to KLM. It doesnt show as a refund so they know you got to where you needed to go.
They cannot access others carriers' itineraries (beside US Airways ones, and I don't know if that is still true with the reservation system swtich). What you say could work on itineraries issued by UA, but the OP was not on one.l
