I think the moderators watch the threads, especially the larger ones getting a lot of interest, and I trust their judgement.

I had been watching a thread about posting "successes" that was getting very long in the tooth IMHO. To me, the drumbeat of posts themselves is disappointing. I saw there an exchange of self-congratulation on finding a saver award from, gasp, Dallas to Orange County next July !!

The example given in the Guidelines about searching old threads really has to do with a travel fact, and the ability of a user to look at the old thread and get the information they want. And to not post at all. Indeed, there is another Guideline that says don't bump the old posts without good reason.

By the way, the entire issue of thread starting and post bumping isn't even mentioned in the list of disciplinary reasons--this has gotta be more of a "guideline" than a "rule."

And the thread we are posting on here is about people's thoughts about an issue and not a fact. A big part of this issue is even trying to figure out just what the facts are.
