TREK is a good word here. Unless you actually want to do some touring and on-the-way sightseeing or you have huge amounts of luggage you don't want to have to unload and put on an aircraft and then retrieve at destination, flying is much quicker and easier. I live in Wales and still prefer to fly, usually from BHX. I admit to some bias at the moment as a couple of months ago had car break downs (normally 110% reliable car) both TO and FROM the ferry and spent many miserable hours in freezing cold in lonely spots in North Wales. Stern letter to AA still being composed! (Them: "where are you?" Me: "On the A487 about 5 miles south of Caernarfon going towards Porthmadog, just near a 200 foot high radio tower covered with red lights." Them: That's not enough information. Our service people would never find you"

Factor in your petrol/diesel costs for the journey and you will find less differential in the price (although fuel is much cheaper in Ireland).
