I learned that usually you have a higher chance of having your seat assignment untouched if you call KLM directly and requested them. If you call NW, even if you told the agent to go to the KLM system, there's a chance that KLM will reassign your seat.

Just buy one of those phone cards and call KLM in the Netherlands.
