Did anyone here see the Nova special over ten years ago on the construction of the 777? They put an explosive bolt on one of the fan blades, throttled the engine up and blew the blade off. It was amazing to see in slow motion. There is a Kevlar sleeve around the engine designed to contain failures. It was a pretty violent event, and although the sleeve distended somewhat, it completely contained the failure.

If you can find this show, I highly recommend watching it. They also shoot dead chickens and a fire-hose stream into a running engine. PLUS, they bend the wings until they break (25 feet)!!!
