One advantage in purchasing on line is the visbility in the 'my info' file on the NW website. Tickets purchased by telephone will not register there. I think it a convenience to have all my travel visible in one spot.

Another question, however, does NW offer Z fares in all markets or only Europe?

NW offers Z fares to Asia as well. One of the more competitive Z fares being offered right now is to Manila (ZRXMNL) for USD2,207 which is cheaper than some B fares and all the Y fares. I did not see an advance purchase requirement though I only had a quick glance of the rules.
