I just had a friend go with me to BKK. He only decided a few weeks before travel. Seems contrary to the theory "Book early" they typically are dumping award inventory into the system on some of these routes a few weeks before departure, probably when they've concluded it is unlikely to be a sold-out flight.
Similarly, if I search for discout fares to BKK (for example, in May), they typically would only show M fares now (at least for my most efficient, MSP>NRT>BKK routing). As the date approaches, they seem to load cheaper fares (such as Q) into the system around 8 weeks or so before departure.
Geez, it would be nice to be able to plan a vacation without having so much time and effort revolving around getting the stupid ride there at a good price . . .
