Do you think 1 hour between nested flight is too risky?

I am trying to add a few miles to my NW account and burn a MCO at the same time, so I came up with a nested routing for an upcoming trip. 1st ticket is BWI-MSP-SMF, second is SMF-MSP-DTW. The problem is that the time from arrival of my MSP-SMF segment and the departure of the SMF back to MSP is only one hour. Normally, no problem, but since I will be checking luggage, do you think I will have to claim it at SMF, then re-check it to DTW? Also, will there be enough time to get through security?

Maybe NW will let me check my bags all the way through BWI-MSP-SMF-MSP-DTW?

Or is this whole idea just too risky?
