Hmmm...that's interesting. I was one of the original NEXUS card holders and I recently got my new card for air, land and sea. I used my card to cross the border this week and had no trouble. I never gave them any car registration when I originally registered and I can't remember giving them a drivers licence.
By the way, it sounds like the interviews are getting much tougher then when I had mine a few years ago. They asked me a few questions about why I flew to the US. I didn't even have to prove that I was employed.
