There's another thread that talks about name changes. I had no trouble at all just snai-mailing them a letter with photocopies of my MP card and some ID, but then again my name was in fact a nickname of my legal first name, so it may not work for you. I would just try it rather than asking a random agent on the phone what they may or may not do. (I think fax would work too.)
