My experience in London is that at least a few restaurants I've been to won't take Amex and at least one major museum/gallery won't, either. Enough reason to keep an MC/Visa without an outrageous FOREX fee in my travel wallet.

I'd be really interested in any answers to ashcroftj1's question above.
