Married segments are so that the airline can have different availability from origin-hub-destination than from the hub to the final destination. Used to be, you could book a trip one segment at a time to get around yield management if the inventory you needed was there separately but not in a origin-destination request.

This also explains how AA can hold back domestic F seats for international connections, rather than giving them all away to upgraders at the hub.
