as a reply, all these things don't really apply. LH and UA have a revenue sharing agreement across the atlantic and all connecting flights... Thus the whole idea of UA gaining money doesn't work. On the other hand the ANA / UA example makes sense for UA.

Doesn't solve the mystery, but a nice idea...
