Well, you do have two competing interests: "cheap" and "direct". If you do have a strict budget, you should keep in mind that you can fly this route using LCCs. Tiger Airways does, for instance, offer a flight from SZX to SIN, and you can take an Air India Express flight to three or four cities in India from there. Total cost is ca. $240 USD one way (taxes included)
