This is the westernmost *A hub in Europe. Believe it or not, Lisbon is to the west of London (and, frankly virtually all of the UK), so it is the shortest hop across the pond (EWR-LIS = 3370 miles, shorter than EWR-LON).

Mind you, TAP isn't exactly SQ in terms of luxurious service, but you may find ready availability. And it's a nice, underappreciated airline that most people overlook.

And if you're looking to create a stopover, LIS or surrounding areas are not bad places to visit, either.
As long as you stay on the A340. Avoid the A300 (yes, an A300 EWR-LIS).
