Unlike international itineraries, taxes and fees tend to be fairly low for domestic awards (BOS-LAX RT is $5) so you don't have to worry about that so much in this case. The value of miles not earned, of course, should be taken into account, in addition to the q-miles/points not earned, if that's important to you.
