Remember on BD you get a personal year which is right down to the day - i.e. If your year started 20th March 2007, it should go through to the 19th March 2008. You therefore need to earn miles to retain status by the 19th of March 2008 - Miles earned after the 19th March 2008 will count to your following year.
Personally I thought this was pretty clear.
Note in the above example that you would continue to have status for the following month as BD gives you a overhang month to allow for any flights to hit your account before they send out a new card.
