There is -NOTHING- that prevents them to charge you a much higher rate for the nights beyond the one you originally booked ....

The max they can charge for the room is posted (along with the checkout policy) pretty much on every room door ...
It doesn't hold true for spg properties. The highest room rate is not always posted in every hotel and the official stance of spg is that properties are allowed to vary their maximum they can charge.
