Many Hong Kong originated passengers do travel to Canada on UA via USA. UA fare is a lot lower than AC especially those traveling via YVR to YYZ. UA would route them YVR-ORD-YYZ. I know somebody traveled from HKG to YVR via SFO on UA a lot.
UA's SEA/SFO/HKG fare is a lot cheaper than AC's SEA/YVR/HKG fare. Sometimes AC matches UA fares but these fares are not available to Canadian residents.
