In general it is "use it or loose it". If your flying habits were such that you can not maintain status, NW (and others) will not be interested in maintaining you status. If, however, you had certain circumstances in 2003 that slowed your flying and you can demonstrate more flying in 2004 (busy November/December, or busy start to the year), NW may be inclined to give you status.
Never hurts to ask, and be prepared to show that you can maintain status in 2004.
