No, they won't back date it.
Let it lapse. Ignore all the e-mails and letters about renewing before it expires.
When you need it again, walk into the first RCC you want to visit and tell them that you want to join again. They'll charge you the appropriate fee, give you a temporary card/number, and you'll be set for another 12 to 13 months (depending on the day of the month you join and how you manage renewal the following year).
