The "ticket-has-no-value-after-departure-time" rule does NOT apply to all tickets, just most restricted/nonrefundable ones. If you purchase a ticket in a higher fare class, you might not have this restriction. Always read (and print out!) the detailed fare rules if there is any chance that you might need to refer to them.
